September 4 prompt: ‘step’
A Step Back in Time
Ellie paused with her foot on the first step, mesmerised.
How many feet had formed those dips in the ascending staircase?
Prisoners would never have graced the front door of the Governor’s residence of this penal colony, nor almost any other door actually — except their barren cells, according to the historical buildings all around.
“Fascinating, isn’t it?” The voice broke Ellie’s reverie, and looking up she saw the tour guide on the balcony above.
“A snippet, just for you. Be sure to check the Kitchen door exit for a REALLY worn step. A cat could shimmy through beneath that door!”

September 11 prompt: ‘end’
Decisions, decisions!
Roxanne was unamused on arrival at the Pearly Gates, faced with Joe Bloggs, standing in for the ethereal St. Peter while he had his morning tea break.
Joe was a regular at this job, working the short, Monday public holiday weeks.
St.Pete trusted Joe to make the correct end decision about each wannabe angel.
Despite his average, workaday appearance (he still wore denim shorts and navy blue singlet, although holes had to be cut in the back for the wings), he had unerring instincts about who should reap a REWARD, and who had bitten off more than they could CHEW.

September 18 prompt: ‘question’
Eternally Enigmatic
Anticipating the question, I worked out my answer well in advance.
Son: “The kids at school don’t believe in Father Christmas… they reckon it’s your parents give his presents.”
Me: “So, you don’t believe in Father Christmas any more?”
Son: “… no. I don’t think so.”
Me: “Well, You and your friends are right! There is NO Father Christmas…
for those who don’t believe in him! Why should he keep coming to anyone who doesn’t believe in him?
Would you, if you were him?”
Son: (wide-eyed, gasping, near speechless) “No way!”
and then hastily, “I believe, Mum. I DO BELIEVE!”
