Hunter’s Moon
They shot ten kangaroos that night. Some in full flight; others as they turned away from the pitiless spotlight. The last victim was a gentle-faced grey doe, soft stricken eyes stretched wide in confusion and terror. A perfect target. After she had fallen, movement continued within her pouch. Overwhelming sickness, then red-hot rage engulfed me as a joey was pulled from her lifeless body into the horror of blinding light; gruff and alien sounds. The smell of fear thickened the swirling dust, as his captor triumphantly held him high. (read more)

June 12 prompt ‘priority’
Dread-day
It’s close! Frighteningly close. Seeking escape, I spin around, searching every direction for refuge.
A building explodes across the street. A shower of glass needles rains down. I fling up my arm to shelter my face, but it’s too late. Countless strikes pierce my skin. Impossible to shield myself. My hand comes away wet. Bloody. A cracking noise makes me look up through my blurred vision, to see the corner of another building falling. This one won’t miss me… (read more)

June 19 ‘anticipation’
No Pain, No Gain
Her shoulders were aching again. Not the actual joints, but low down at the bottom of her shoulder blades. A strange dragging pain, as though some kind of weight hung from them. Almost always it happened at night; all too often waking her from sleep. Caitlin wondered if she’d been dreaming and something had made her tense her spine; tighten her shoulders; maybe the feeling was stress? Or fear? (read more)

Leap of Faith
“We have followed wherever you have led,” one said, and the others nodded firmly. Trust in their leader was total. His most daring exploits had never led them astray. And although today’s search and destroy mission had been fruitless despite their best intentions and efforts, there had been countless close encounters and near-misses. More than enough to stir pulses and cause extreme moisture on foreheads and down spines held tight and upright atop their horses. (read more)
