Prompt and Circumstance

Do you fancy reading a collection of short/shorts (alias Flash Fiction or Flash Non-Fiction – as the case may be)? They are quick little reads to fill in a dull moment.

In 2016, I began answering the 500 word ‘prompt’ challenges for the weekend  write-ins on Amazon’s writing platform, WriteOn by Kindle. Sadly, Amazon has closed this site, despite the most desperate attempts by its authors to save it, or help with administration – even offering to buy it out. All pleas fell on deaf ears and none were acknowledged. The site closed on 22nd March, 2017.

Many of us have moved varying amounts of our works to Wattpad – myself included. In case you want to check, this is how my ‘Prompt and Circumstance – a short story collection’ is growing on Wattpad.

It’s a work-in-progress for now,  but please feel free to read all I’ve transferred so far on Wattpad, using the link above. (A click on the cover picture will also take you there.) I’m planning for you to be able to click on the covers below (and see tiny synopses of each to hopefully intrigue you to read them), to take you directly to my individual Wattpad presentations.

Let’s see how it all develops.

Genesis x Two coverGenesis x Two ‘revival’ (Jan. 29-31, 2016)

It was a perfectly ordinary Wednesday for some.
For others it comprised blood, sweat and tears – moving hand-in-hand with hopes, dreams – and fears.
And for some, genesis and exodus were as one word.

Meanwhile, DownunderMeanwhile Downunder ‘furniture’ (Feb. 19-21, 2016)

This is Chapter Two of the book I’m writing about some of our treasures

‘Just Moodling About – My Favourite Things’

Gymkhana,W.end writein

A Bush Gymkhana ‘compete’ (Feb. 26-28, 2016)

An excerpt from the chapter ‘A Bush Gymkhana’ from my first book of farming memoirs –                     ‘Old McLarsen had some Farms’ – Brave Beginnings.

a star shines brightly

A Star Shines Brightly ‘chill’ (March 4-6, 2016)

All Stars are not created equal… some shine much brighter than others.

Leading Lady

Leading Lady ‘portrait’ (March 11-13, 2016)

She watched as swirls of enthusiasm broke out among some small groups as they recognized a portrait of a well-known and respected character. Many of the subjects were unknown to her – or perhaps her lack of recognition was due to the avant-garde approach used by many artists.

Sufferin' SelfieSufferin’ Selfie ‘reflect’ (March 18-20, 2016)

‘Some days are diamonds, some days are stones’, goes the popular song.
But then others are Silver and just a very few are Golden.
Here’s Cheers to one of our most golden moments.

Flimflam of the Fifties.2

Flimflam of the Fifties ‘trick’ (March 25-27, 2016)

Nothing new about these old tricks – just the innocence and amusement they offered to all.

Highly Exaggerated

Highly Exaggerated ‘height’ (April 1-3, 2016)

Mark Twain said, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated” and here is an exaggeration of a ‘higher’ order.

Omni-Busker

Omni-Busker ‘bus’ (April 8-10, 2016)

This was a combination of bus, driver and passengers that REALLY worked.
No-one was on the wrong bus this time…

neighbours

Neighbours ‘neighbor’ (April 15-17, 2016)

In dreams our neighbours can become anything we choose. In reality? Well-ll…

Disaster

Disaster ‘melt’ (April 22-24, 2016)

Sometimes, if you’re REALLY lucky, a seeming disaster can turn out quite the opposite. Even become history-making!

Nothin' like a Nanny

There ain’t Nothin’ like a Nanny ‘diet’ (April 29-May 1, 2016)

There are Earth Mothers and there are all kinds of Nannies in this world – this story is about one I choose to call an ‘Earth Nanny’.

Step InsideStep Inside ‘real Estate’ (May 6-8, 2016)

It was a breakthrough of sorts,
but just like Pandora’s box,
more was revealed than expected.

RetrenchedRetrenched ‘stumped’ (May 13-15, 2016)

Retrench (definition) – to cut down, reduce, or diminish.
But sometimes not… If the love and spirit are strong enough, a whole new world awaits.

Journey into the UnknownJourney into the Unknown ‘hike’ (May 20-22, 2016)

A hike into the wilderness,  or a rail trip in an alien landscape…   both share the same aspects of a journey into the unknown.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday ‘birthday’ (May 27-29, 2016)

Sometimes the star of the Birthday celebration becomes the centre of  attention for all the wrong reasons. Is something sinister happening here?

TropheticTrophetic ‘trophy’ (June 3-5, 2016)

Trophetic (definition) – Having characteristics that deserve a trophy.  Hmm… some seem more appropriate and well-earned than others.  Thought to add my voice to those who would speak for those who can’t.

Shearly BelovedShearly Beloved ‘buzzer’ (June 10-12, 2016)

Not the ‘Son of Sam’? No, no… more likely Sam, the son of Edward Scissorhands.  By chance today, I met the very man I had in mind, mercifully in a mellow mood.

The Bigger Picture

The BIGGER picture ‘schedule’ (June 17-19, 2016)

‘All visitors welcome’ was the ‘norm’ on this farm, until all schedules were disrupted by a visitor who would stay for a l-o-n-g time.

Bus Stop

Bus Stop? ‘peculiar Parking’ (June 24-26, 2016)

Of course, when you have a ‘bikini-bus’ (a two-parter), specialty parking is a necessity – but in this situation, some particularly peculiar parking was called for.

Organise UsOrganise US? ‘organization’ (July 1-3, 2016)

The thing about creatures, both great and small, is that they’re just not into the ‘organising’ business. Man will eternally discover he rues more than he rules as he learns to his chagrin, even the most domesticated are dedicated to independence of the highest order.

20.20 Vision20:20 Vision ‘doorway’ (July 8-10, 2016)

The first ‘Betty’ chapter – ‘The Cruel Reality’

Rose-tinted glasses are ALWAYS preferable to the squeaky clean variety…  especially as the bloom of youth fades.

20:20 Vision ‘trap’ (15-17 July 2016)

Chapter Two of the ‘Betty’ saga -‘A Class Act’ (alias ‘more memorable moments’)

Chicken Me

Chicken? Me? ‘mountain’ (July 22-24, 2016)

With many meanings (and understandings) of the names ‘chicken’ (and ‘drumstick’ too), here’s some you may not be so familiar with.  It was a most fascinating ‘newbie’ to me.

Another.Man.s.Treasure.thumbnail

Another Man’s Treasure ‘lakebed’ (July 29-31, 2016)

‘Hanrahan’ was the doom and gloom commentator on all seasonal variances, created by an Aussie bush bard writing under the pseudonym ‘John O’Brien’, epitomising many ‘old bushies’ of days gone by.  But Hanrahan did not foresee that ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’.  Attitude is ALL when that big black cloud reveals its silver lining.

Once Upon a Gumnut.150x95

Once Upon a Gumnut ‘invention’ (August 5-7, 2016)

Mighty Oaks from little Acorns Grow – and likewise Mighty Gum Trees from tiny Gumnuts – but how does the prompt ‘invention’ fit in here?

Hobson's Choice.150x95

Hobson’s Choice ‘champion’ (August 12-14, 2016)

This story has taken on a life of it’s own thanks to encouragement and curiosity about what else happened… and so I’ve made it a short story of unknown length as I add chapters to the unfolding tale.

Ohh NO...

Ohh NO… ‘jokester’ (August 19-21, 2016 : In 50 words or less, craft an original joke in the format of your choosing) Some people really should stick to writing stories!

20.20 Vision 150x95

20:20 Vision ‘meal’ (August 26-28, 2016)

Chapter 3: ‘A Bit of Hanky Panky’ – Now we know where Betty got her character-istics from!

On a Clear Day ‘scale’ (Sept. 2-4, 2016)

… you can see forever, especially if your viewpoint is high enough.

Someday, Somewhere ‘compass’ (Sept. 9-11, 2016)

Stranded at an airport – ‘Just a grain of sand on the beach of the world…’ Ohh!

Sozzled Sailors – ‘beach’ (Sept.16-18, 2016)

There’s always a story behind that message in the bottle that gets washed up – but you would think two old Captains would show a little more class!

Out of Time and Place – ‘décor’ (Sept. 23-24, 2016)

Imagine finding your ‘forever home’ on the other side of the world, over a century after you were born!

On Reflection – ‘mirror’ (Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2016)

Speedsters? Two old dears with specs on the end of their noses? A car redolent with the aromas of old lavender and lace, ang granny squares being crocheted by the front seat passenger?

Aww C’mon… Break it Up ! – ‘precarious’ (Oct. 7-9, 2016)

It’s like eating an elephant – just take bite-size pieces, one at a time. All is possible when things are broken down to the smallest denominator.

A Bemusing Bouquet – ‘bouquet’ (Oct.14-16, 2016)

Flowers are symbols of many special things – but feathers?

Atonement Day – ‘refund’ (Oct.21-23, 2016)

In retrospect we should have ‘high-tailed’ it out of there immediately – but we had no idea of the challenges to come.

Bloodthirsty – ‘mad Science’ (Oct. 28-30, 2016)

A surprising twist makes this story a different kind of macabre than expected.
