is Book One of our farm memoirs.
Kanute (alias Old McLarsen) and myself (the Missus) served a kind of farming apprenticeship, working for a friend on his inherited property in the middle of the Western Australian wheat-belt. The 6,000 acres of his grandfather’s farm had been let to run-down to avoid as many greedy death taxes of the day as possible. Now all that was cleared, it was time to rev up and get the show back on the road. He needed help and we needed experience. A marriage made in Heaven, as they say.
The following excerpts were prepared to be read on our local community radio station – and some actually were, until a change of heart of the station owner stopped them in their tracks. Maybe their day was meant to be this one, this way. I can’t seem to worry about this, feeling instead great satisfaction that someone, somewhere will hear them.
The picture of farm-life last century, as experienced by a couple of wannabe farmer, fresh from the city, office jobs and air-conditioned comfort were so much more AWESOME than most happenings credited with this adjective in this day and age.
I invite you to pull up a bale of hay and take a seat (if only in your imagination) and enjoy hearing the stories as you read the transcripts (in case you don’t speak ‘Strine’)!
I promise you tears, and many of them – but of laughter much more than sorrow. Although must admit, the odd poignant moment does sneak in. Ahh, but that’s Life – especially on a farm.
PS: PATIENCE please dear reader. They ARE coming… soon! Maybe read my other scribblings in the meantime?
